Are JW EX elders in need of our contempt or sympathy ?

point 1. not so long i would have strung them all up and hanged them.. point 2. these guys were the real succers, not only did they become jw,s, they embraced and adopted the cults teachings, and to some extent subjugated thier familys happiness, and thier own,to elevate themselves, and achieve status and recieve privellages, ie not have a f-----g life.

point 3 they had the onerus task of making sense, of the ever changing (truths) and having to teach that crap to the rest of us, and cope with the subsequent questionings that would invariably follow.. point 4.they had to take the lead in (sales) distributing literature.

point 5.they were the authoritarian face of the society, and a lot of people, (myself included ) thought they were jumped up janitors and window cleaners with a chip on thier shoulders.

There were a few Grade A a$$holes, but this is just human nature. These people would be a$$holes, with or without the cult.

Yup. We had a public talk this weekend where they speaker was yammering on about how there's "no kindness in this world (outside of the Organization, that is...)". He bitched about how people at the store don't even hold the door for you. But people hold the door for me all the time!

It makes you realize that there are really good non-jws and real prick non-jws. Just like there are really good JWs and real prick JWs. It's called dealing with humanity.

Falcon, I tried to be balanced, It took some effort, and ive been rewarded, with an untainted thread, but your right,on a case by case basis. MY estimate would be 80% (progresive) but the remaining 20% created more fear and alarm, so in my not so humble opinion the congregations, were still in negative equity, not places were any positivity was present.(it could have been so different) SIGH !!!

eruption, it's cool, homey.......I actually tend to agree with your estimate. As regards my experience, it has usually been only 1-3 elders out of any given body who are the trouble-makers. And any damage that these men caused will serving, whether unwittingly or purposely, these men have paid for their error 1,000-fold. Guys like mrquik who have come to the realization of the real truth and suffered deserve to live the rest of their lives out in peace.

When you look at Matthew 24, Jesus stated that there would be wars, earthquakes, and famines in various places. He did NOT say there would be an increase or a noticeable shift in these events. Rather he said that his followers SHOULD NOT be alarmed. Jesus knew in advance that there would be individuals(Campings) and even organizations(Watchtower) playing off of the fear and uncertainty and that's why Jesus warned his followers to not be decieved because many would be as a result of the false prophets saying, "he's out in the wilderness!", or "he's in the inner rooms!" Matter fact it wouldn't be a difficult thing to replace "out in the wilderness" with "ruling invisibly in the spirit world since 1914", or replace "he's in the inner rooms" with "he's stepped into the inner sanctuary."

I'll never read those scriptures the same way again. Great logic.

To me, all these events should motivate us to reevaluate ourselves, our lives, our outlook, our conduct, our treatment of other people, etc.. To do the opposite would be to fulfill Jesus' prophecy of false profits spreading fear and anxiety trying to scare people into loving God, rather than loving God out of a heartfelt desire based upon love and honor.

100% agree. "Us or Them" mentality at it's most blatant. Which leads me to my next question in this thread.....

What are your thoughts on this Matthew 24:14? As much as I disagree with many of the WTBS's doctrine, there is a pretty large preaching campaign carried out by them. How do you guys interpret this "sign"?

"This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come."

PSacramento, it's strange how the Bible says to "be found at peace, without blemish" while the WTBS tacks on 5,000,000,000 further regulations, procedures and tasks that you are supposed to be found with. Talk about the fine print getting ya.

There is no question that much is bad in the world these days, but I don't think those are proof of anything but mankind's terrible collective stupidity. As in poisoning the waters, nuclear reactors, et cetera. Those are real threats, and they are not the result of a God who will inflict such pain on his creatures.

dgp, I can see the logic of this statement. It would seem that we are more of a danger to ourselves and the planet than some vengeful deity. And considering that a very large chunk of the world's population follow faiths that DON'T believe in the Bible, again we come back to the whole arguement about how your faith/circumstances/values are more of a result of what part of the earth you were born at, thereby calling into question the credibility of religion at all.

Thank you for that explanation. That is a very insightful point you make. I guess you can also view as a warning to the Christians living during the impending destruction of actual Jerusalem. Since it's pretty accepted that Peter died around 67 CE, would this be reasonable to conclude that his message at 2 Peter chapter 3 was directed to his living contemporaries and not some distant Apocaplypse 2000 years later?

All valid points. I would say though, that there can't be a blanket judgment on them. Each ex-elder's situation has to be viewed differently. I know ex-elders who saw the BS and acted accordingly. But conversely, I know ex-elders who while not serving anymore, still push the company line. So it would have to be a case-by-case evaluation.

There are NO signs of the Last Days, Christ makes it clear when he says:

It will come like a theif in the night

No one knows but Our Father.

It is NOT up to man to know or try to guess the time of things set by God.

PSacramento (and anyone else who wants to chime in) - In light of this discussion, what do you make of 2 Peter 3: 3, 4?

3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”
